Job Description
The qualified candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree and required certification in special education to teach in the state of Missouri.  This position is for the purpose of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing students' success in communcation skills, academics, behavior, interpersonal skills, transition skills, and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas, including community involvement; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress. Some students may have limited communication skills, limitied physical mobility, traumatic brain injuries, developmental disabilities, severe behavioral issues, severe health concerns, or generally be unable to function in a manner comparable to their typical peers.  
 
Grain Valley teachers are expected to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for their education in accordance with each pupil’s ability and to establish positive, supportive relationships with parents and other staff members.  All candidates should demonstrate a commitment to their own ongoing professional growth.  
 
Essential Functions
  • Administer developmental assessments, subject specific assessments, motor development, etc. to  evaluate student competency levels 
  • Administer first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (tube feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.) 
  • Advise parents/guardians regarding student achievement, classroom performance, etc.  
  • Assesses student progress towards learning goals to provide feedback on individual learning plans 
  • Collaborate with other staff members and parents
  • Provide developmentally appropriate instruction utilizing a variety of methods
  • Differentiate classroom work for each student to address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans 
  • Directs paraprofessionals to provide an effective classroom program 
  • Instruct students and provide instructional support for their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills 
  • Maintain a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records (e.g. daily log of activities, behavior or medical logs, progress, referrals, etc.) 
  • Manage student behavior for a safe and optimal learning environment
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, cafeteria, community, etc.) 
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns 
  • Track and monitor student progress for a caseload of students for IEP goals
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
